Why not eat insects?

Hunter-gatherers often eat insects.  Here is a great TED talk suggesting we should eat more insects.  It's motivated by the speaker's eco-vegetarianism, which I think is a little misguided in some respects, but a thought-provoking talk nonetheless.  You probably eat a delicacy that is pretty darn close to an insect, often around the holidays or on vacation.  See if you can guess what it is, and watch the video to find out.

I have yet to eat any insects (on purpose).  I suppose it's only a matter of time.  How thrilling.

"Locust is the shrimp of the land"Heh, heh.  I've often referred to shrimp as "cockroaches of the sea".  I still love 'em though.

Come to the Ancestral Health

Come to the Ancestral Health Symposium in LA next August and I'll take you to a restaurant not too far from UCLA called Typhoon. They have an invertebrate section on their menu listing such delicacies as ants, crickets, worms, giant waterbugs, and more. Very primal, though I suspect they fry everything in typical industrial seed oils.

The past 3 summers I've harvested grasshoppers (I go out of town and out of agricultural lands that get pesticide and fertilizers applied, just trying to limit the toxin intake) with a butterfly net.  Scoop 'em up, put them in a big plastic wide-mouth container (like restaraunt sized mayo containers, washed out of course) and put them in the freezer to kill them off.  Then pick through the mass of bugs to pick out moths, bees, hornets you get occasionally. Then cook up into a coconut curry dish.  I have to admit, it is gross, and I have to mentally focus on stifling a gag reflex at times.  I've eaten a fair bit of hoppers over time this way, and it still gives me that squeamish feeling.  I can plow through organ meats, any seafood you can think of with no gag reflex, but 'hoppers are still giving me fits at times.  I can grab an occasional hoppper and wolf it down, just to gross my pals out, but it secretly still makes me squirm!Do it!

I've never been against it. I

I've never been against it. I was going to catch a bunch of the big grasshoppers last year, but they never got very big.If I ever go to asia, no doubt I'll  be eating all the bugs i can. The sight of them makes my mouth water.
