You don't need to buy a standing desk

You can find a standing desk anywhere.  I'm down in Florida right now visiting my grandmother, and I've perched my laptop on her counter top above the sink.  You don't need to buy an expensive standing desk -- just find a desk, table, or counter and adjust the height with a box, stool, crate, or phone books.   (Bathrobes are essential too, and hunter-gatherers were known to wear them well into the afternoon.)

I've been standing up while working more often.  Started with a just an hour a day, which was hard and distracting at the time.  And now I'll stand for 3 or 4 hours.  I shift my weight a little, and move around a bit, but generally I just don't notice it anymore.  I don't stand all day long.  I sit down too.

Anyhow, I'm visiting my grandmother,  and using it as an opportunity to isolate myself from NYC/email/voicemail, and just read, write, exercise, and eat real food.  We had the most delicious lamb chops last night...I'll post those pictures soon.

What about your neckmuscles,

What about your neckmuscles, when you work like this? You always look down to the notebook, when I do it my neck and the next day my head is screaming at me.However, when I have to write certain important documents I tend to not work on a desk, because it kind of distracts me. One of my favourite spots is sitting on the floor with my back on the radiator. Enjoy your weekend and cheers from Germany

In his hunter-gatherer-times Arthur Dent wore a bathrobe too. ;-)And now I'm looking for a nice box to put my notbook on...  Or perhaps the windowsill will do.

When I worked at Microsoft, they let one guy have a standing desk. He'd had back surgery and had a note from his doctor. I always wondered if it wouldn't be better to prevent the back surgery in the first place and let us all have the option! I hate sitting to use the computer. Whenever possible, I use the laptop in the kitchen on the counter.

I tried to build a standing desk at my office with boxes but my boss wouldn't let me.

So much for encouraging thinking outside of the box , eh?

Im fortunate enough for a standing desk to be the norm in my line of work (heavy transportation parts sales)! One of my co-workers, who is 66 this year, stands from 6:30am until 4:30 pm every day, 5 days a week. He only sits for one hour for his lunch break. He has never had a back problem in his life.-Tristan
